Kendra's parents were only fourteen when they had her. Now Kendra's mom just got her PHD and got a job at City Collage. Her dad still lives with his mother and he is flat out broke. He wants to support Kendra so he has to borrow money from his mom and she lies off disability checks.
Kendra also has a friend named Adonna. However Adonna is more than her best friend she is Kendra's aunt.
Kendra has a very depressing life. Her mother doesn't seem like she wants her, and she is emotionally lost. The book shows that American ghetto's can be very harsh and poor. A lot of people get pregnant when they are young. they have a hard time supporting their family and there is often family troubles. However with hard work anyone can survive the ghetto's and become educated and rich.
Kendra is a very talented person who is very gifted. she was born into a environment where education is not all that important but some how she pulled through with the help of her grandma. She also happens to be emotionally lost, but her parents become much more responsible and she feels loved again.
